Driver Education at the Black Cat
So many things happened yesterday it's hard to know where to start. I guess I'll skip over some of the less interesting things and just jump to last night.
I met Mandy & Erika at U-topia for dinner. I got their first, so I sat down at the bar and proceeded to overhear (um, yeah, not listening in. They were right next to me!) a conversation between a couple about Scotch. He was telling her how much he enjoys a good Scotch, and then they were talking about restaurants that have good bars. I was all with them until he said, "yeah, like Chili's has a great bar." hahaha. I didn't realize Chili's served Scotch!
After a delicious dinner of pasta, we went over to the Black Cat for Amy Ray's show. We got there at 8:30, which was when the show was supposed to start, but nothing was happening yet. Well, there was a dj playing 80s tunes and people were standing around. It looked like a middle school dance. Finally, the first opening band came on, and their music wasn't terrible, they were just completely unenthusiastic about the whole thing. But the bass player was cute, so I amused myself by watching him.
The second opening band was Athens Boys Choir. I had never heard of them before, but they were great. It took me a while to get into them, because it was mostly spoken word poetry, which in general, I don't enjoy, but once I got over that, I really liked them. It's not really something I think would be good to listen to on CD, though. I think you really need to see them to appreciate them.
Amy Ray was last, and she was great. She played mostly stuff from her new CD, Prom, which I like a lot more than her last CD. Despite our hopes, though, she didn't play any Indigo Girls stuff. I was thinking maybe she can't play that stuff without Emily. Even though, y'know, Simon totally plays Simon & Garfunkel stuff sans Garfunkel.
Tonight, heading back to the Black Cat for Ben Lee. There've only been 2 shows I wanted to see there for a long time, and of course, they are back to back nights.
