It's a Christmas Miracle!

Seriously. When I walked in to Safeway last night, I first noticed something was amiss when I saw the butter. It was by the eggs, and normally it's by the cheese. Then the cookies. They have changed sides of the store completely. By the time I got to the former butter/cookie aisle (yes, sadly, that was the same aisle) I remembered something. Safeway had applied to sell beer and wine. and surprise! It was allowed. The former cookie/butter aisle is now the beer and wine aisle.

This might not seem so miraculous to those of you who live in normal places, where alcohol can be sold in the grocery. It's not normally the case in the District, or in Maryland, where I grew up. Usually it's got to be in a separate liquor store. Well, in Montgomery County, Maryland, they have beer-wine-delis and then county run liquor stores. I am dreaming of a more simple life now. A life where I can buy food and wine in the same store, and not have to make a special trip to the liquor store. Although if I need a lot, I will still call the liquor store. C'mon, they deliver. Or I guess if I need something other than beer or wine, I'll go to the liquor store.

The best part? The aisle is labeled. It says: 6 -- Breakfast, at the top. Then, underneath, where you list the foods in the aisle, it says beer-wine-beer-cheese-wine. Breakfast of champions, indeed.

I guess previously, cookies and butter were considered breakfast foods.

I find it incredibly annoying that you cannot buy alcohol in the supermarket in Maryland. I got used to doing this in Michigan, even though they still have backwards blue laws for Sundays. They have even weirder laws in Pennsylvania about how you can't buy a 6 pack of beer except in a restaurant. If you buy beer in the store, it has to be an entire case. And don't get me started on what it was like in Alabama!

Nabb, (may I call you Nabb?) I agree, totally a hassle. My family's from New Orleans, where vodka is on the shelf next to the oreos and you can take a drink to go if you don't finish it at the bar.

Safeway couldn't sell beer & wine until they got approval from both the ABC and the ANC (neighborhood commission). There are some groceries in Maryland that can sell it, but that's because they have a license that's been grandfathered in. quel pain.

Jayne, you must buy a case of beer?? of all the same type, or can you mix & match 6-packs? In the District, there is some crazy law that if you buy airplane sized bottles of liquor, you must by a minimum of 6 (mix or match)

And I thought beer was only for breakfast in Wisconsin. :) They love their beer there. Now that I'm in Indiana, though, some of the small towns seem to have the separation of groceries and liquor laws.

it's just so much easier if you can buy it all at once! I don't really understand the point of separating it, either. I mean, it's still legal to buy. Who cares where you buy it?

No mixing and matching. You had to buy an entire case of the same type of beer. Bizarre, I know...

that is really weird, and would make parties either really bland or really expensive.

Yes, not very convenient if you are a single woman that doesn't consume a whole lot of beer. It was very strange...
