Driving past the street where groupies live
but not quite ready to stop the car yet.
Saturday, I went to see Ben Lee & Aimee Mann in Baltimore. It was at a place called Rams Head Live, which, at least compared to DC venues like 9:30 and the Black Cat, was really, really clean. We got there just before Ben came on, and were able to stand super close to the stage. I also met the delightfully charming Nabbalicious.
Ben's set probably wasn't the best ever. Pretty much he played a standard set list, with nothing new & exciting thrown in. By the end of the set, he seemed a little more energetic, but of course, that's when it was over. After the set, I went to get a couple CDs signed, one for me and one for someone else who may read this, so I can't say who exactly. Mandy came with me, and she suggested I tell Ben how I saw him last month at the Birchmere and the month before that at the Black Cat. Maybe he would've remembered me if I had said that, because of our conversation at the Birchmere, but I'm not quite ready to move into groupie status.
I really enjoyed Aimee's set. She played a lot of the same stuff she played at the Birchmere, but the best part was the encores. She played 3 encores, and again took requests. Erika and I yelled again for That's Just What You Are. At one point, she said, "I can't tell what you guys are saying!" so I told Erika to raise her hand. She did, and Aimee called on her! And we finally got to hear the song. That was very cool and very exciting.
I don't have any more Ben Lee dates on my calendar. If anyone hears of any within a reasonable distance of me, you know, let me know.
Up next in the Genevieve Concert Series? Sleater-Kinney.

Gary loves Sleater-Kinney and has no one to go with. He just went to their concert alone in SF a few weeks ago. Nice to know there are others out there who could keep him company.
yeah, I like Sleater-Kinney!
actually, I've been recently contemplating concert going alone. There's always stuff I want to see, and sometimes no one else does. My cousin Anne Yvette told me she goes to shows alone all the time. I should be able to handle it, too!
Not ready for groupie status yet? So sad *laugh* Glad you enjoyed the show!
ah, Molly, I'd probably be ready for groupie status if I weren't embarrassed by it!!
Ohh, the 9:30 Club. Pass me a big ol' serving from Ben's Chili Bowl, please. Scary place after dark...
yum, Ben's Chili Bowl.
yes, 9:30 is dodgy, even in the light. well, not so much the club, per se, but more the area around there.
It was fun meeting you, too, Nabbalicious! you were my first only-knew-online actual meet in person.
I think I'm going to try the concert thing alone. There are a few shows coming up this summer that I'm fairly certain I won't be able to get anyone to go along.
Ben will be at Wolf Trap in August with Ben Folds and Rufus Wainwright!
thanks, Jaslco! I'm now in the process of trying to convince someone to go with me... not sure if Wolf Trap would be the best first solo concert experience!
