Adventure by train
OK, I know I said my next show was going to be Sleater-Kinney. Which is coming up on Saturday. But in the mean time, I added another little Indigo Girls show, last night, in Baltimore.
Anyway, concert last night, in Baltimore. Erika and I decided we didn't want to deal with rush hour traffic, so we'd take the train up & back. Leaving Washington, we took the MARC (a commuter train), which was only $7 and dropped us off about 5 blocks away from the concert. Coming home though was a different story. We had to take Amtrak, for $17, since there aren't MARC trains after about 7:00. The last train left Baltimore at 11:20, so we couldn't miss it. And it was at a different station than the MARC, so we had to take a cab there.
We left the show during the last song. Which normally I don't like to do, but please, it was Galileo, not like I haven't heard that song live more times than I can count. Penn Station was practically deserted. I felt slightly vagrant-like. I was dying of thirst, but all the stores and restaurants were closed, and there were no vending machines.
But, we made the train, the cafe car was still open so I bought some water, and the conductor never took our tickets. All in all, a fairly easy way to travel, despite the $17 ticket, and was worth the money to avoid rush hour traffic.

I like travelling by train for short distances, not like I want to amtrak out to Cali from the East coast or anything...it sure does beat fighting traffic!
I totally agree, Molly. I also would not want to drive to Cali!
I ran into that no MARK at night problem the one time I took it to Baltimore visit friends! But I did not know about the Amtrak price, and so did not have enough money with me. Very luckily I ran into my boss at the train station, picking up her husband, who had done the same thing. We fit 4 people into the cab of their little truck, but it was a free ride home. I was only in DC for about two months, but your post brings back memories.
yeah, the no MARC thing on the weekends and at night is bad news. Amtrak is so much more expensive! I like to take MARC if I fly from BWI, but if I'm coming home on a Sunday night, it doesn't work.
Did you save your ticket? If the conductor didn't take it, it's good for a whole year. Call Amtrak and ask.
Yeah, I know. I did save the ticket. I'll have to find another time to use it!
