"Milk Makes Me Sick" Ads Make Me Sick
This morning on the bus, I saw this poster that really infuriated me. I'm not sure why it made me so mad, other than it's just completely ridiculous. It was an ad for some kind of class action litigation, I suppose against the Dairy Board. It said something like 75% of Americans are lactose intolerant. Are you one of them? If so, you may have a case. Call us!
I have no idea if the 75% figure is correct. I have never had a lactose intolerance problem, and I drank milk nearly everyday until I went to college. (Now it's a little more sporadic, but I do try to drink milk.)
Even if the 75% is correct, the ad is ridiculous. If you know you are lactose intolerant, why keep drinking milk? How is that grounds for a lawsuit?
Abuse of the justice system, I tell you.

Hello?! Lactose intolerance is a medical condition that is genetic. People lack an enzyme to digest lactose. How can you sue someone for that?! What is happening to our country?
Stupid lawyers.
people are nuts.
Wow that IS totally ridiculous. You can really sue over anything these days...
According to Dr. Mirkin at www.drmirkin.com, " People who suffer from gas after drinking milk do not have adequate amounts of the intestinal enzyme, lactase, that is necessary to break down the double sugar in milk called lactose. Since they cannot absorb the double sugar, lactose, it travels to the large intestine where bacteria ferment it to form hydrogen gas and fatty acids. Most of the hydrogen gas is absorbed into the bloodstream and is then blown off through the lungs or it is quickly broken down by the bacteria. So almost all milk intolerant people can drink one glass of milk and suffer from gas pains only when they drink a very large amount of milk."
I think there is a much better reason not to drink milk: the horrendous treatment of cows and their calves. I gave up milk for this ethical reason and haven't missed it. Once you read up on how the big dairies are actually run, you won't want to have anything to do with milk.
