The weird 70s Musical

I love the weird 70s musical. It's definitely not for everyone, though. Last night, I went with Rachael and 2 of her friends to see Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Ok, so technically, this show was on Broadway in 1982, and was first performed in 1968, so it doesn't really fall into the 70s, but you know what? It's a weird 70s musical. (other examples of this genre include Pippin and Godspell.)

I loved it. I had never seen it before, and I only knew a couple of the songs. Rachael loved it, but she had seen it before. Her boyfriend said he liked it, but I have my suspicions that he was just being nice to Rachael. His friend, however, made no qualms about not liking it. Which is fine, like I said, it's not for everyone.

A couple years ago, Dana & I went to see a production of Pippin, which we had both seen before and both love. During intermission, we were in the bathroom, and we overheard these 2 older women discussing how they hated the play, it reminded them of Jesus Christ Superstar, and it was weird. Yes! JC Superstar is a weird 70s musical!

I think maybe what I like best about the weird 70s musical is the glitter. There is always a lot of glitter. Unlike, say, Oklahoma or Rent. Neither of which are very glittery. I have always wanted to see Starlight Express. I mean, it's on roller skates! That can only be good.

I saw Starlight Express for my 10th birthday, I think! It was wonderful, altho' by memory surely it is more weird 80's musical than weird 70's musical? :)

yeah, probably. I just feel like those musicals fit the 70s vibe much more than the 80s, you know? So even if they are 60s or 80s, I still call them 70s.

I think that if I lived in NYC I would spend all of my disposable income on going ot Broadway shows. Nothing entertains me better than a great musical!

I know! I am going to NY next weekend and I may try to see something -- whatever looks good at TKTS is my general plan. But I think it will depend on what everyone else wants to do.
