My mom might be right

I can't believe it, but my mom, who has been harassing me MY WHOLE LIFE to keep my room clean, probably has something there. Last night, I was supposed to meet up with one of my Junior League advisees. I thought she wanted to meet for a drink or something, but when she called, she said, "OK, so I'll be over soon."

Um, OK? Luckily, my apartment was in fairly good shape, since Robin & Byron came over last week and I haven't been home much to mess the joint up. But it certainly wasn't as clean as I would have liked it.

Also, then I had to scramble and figure out something for dinner for 2 people. Luckily, I had planned to make pasta, and I had just enough for 2. Which means I had nothing for lunch today, but that's OK.

Mom, are you reading this? YOU ARE RIGHT. But that's the last I'll say on the subject.

Growing up I tended to be messy. I had a lot of stuff and it was everywhere in my room (I didn't believe in throwing things away). Every since I went to college, where you are relegated to living in one room, I became insanely fastidious and neat. Growing up my Mom was a cleaning freak so we spent a lot of time scouring the house and it rubbed off in my adult years. I am known to thoroughly scrub my place at LEAST once a week and even though there are piles of books everywhere they are rather organized...

I'm trying, really. I need to get rid of a bunch of stuff. Like I told my mom, I didn't get the stuff overnight, so it won't go away overnight. but it's better. and it's just messy, not dirty, so that's something.

I voted for number 2. For the most part, things are clean, but can be a bit messy. But I do the freak out and organize everything fastidiously about once a week, so things don't ever get really bad. And I try to clean as I go along, so that I only have to do a big clean every so often...

I seem to have an aversion to putting things away. I leave clean dishes in the drainer, often using them again before they even make it to the cupboard. I have various piles of clean washing scattered about (although I have sorted some of it into ironing and non-ironing). About a third of my kitchen bench is currently covered with bits of paper (bills to be paid, credit card receipts, other bits of paper that require "action"), keys, ipod, some negatives that T wants a reprint from, half-finished crosswords and Sudokus. Currently I'm using the excuse that I've just moved in and I haven't set myself up with a desk for this sort of stuff yet. But even if I had, it would just be the desk looking like this instead.
Having said that, I'm being very strict with myself and making the bed every morning so my bedroom looks alright and the sewing room has yet to see any action so it's still looking tidy - apart from the pile of collapsed boxes left over from moving - they need to be deconstructed further and tied up for recycling. Must do that this weekend - parents are coming to stay. ARRRGGHHH!! :-)

Jayne, that is what I'm striving for. Keeping things mostly picked up, then once a week, cleaning everything. It's a work in progress.

Paisley, at least all your stuff that's out is clean stuff! Stuff around is one thing, dirty stuff around is entirely different! Good luck with your parents' visit.

Geve, I'll refrain from saying "I told you so". Love, Mom
