Vinegar!

Last night, I went to dinner with 4 work colleagues. We ordered a bottle of wine, and they gave it to the two guys to taste. One of them said, "um. It's a little strong." The other said, "I think it's off" but the waiter insisted it wasn't corked.

We were each poured a glass. Erin took one sip and said, "I think I'm drunk." I took a whiff and said, "Smells like paint thinner." Benito said, "Don't smell it first, just drink. Otherwise, you won't drink it." We all bravely tried to sip it, and all 5 of us declared it tasted awful.

The table next to us was also drinking the same kind of wine, and we didn't understand how they seemed to be enjoying it.

Finally, after deciding it was the wine, and not us, since it is very unusual for everyone at a table not to be able to drink a bottle of wine, we asked the waitress about it. She tasted it, and made a face. Told us it was corked, and brought us a new bottle.

We all tasted the wine, and breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn't the best wine ever, but it was drinkable! Hooray!

I've never heard of the term "corked" to refer to wine being off. Is that a Brussels thing? Or am I just terribly gauche?

I think that's just the wine term...

There is not much that tastes worse than a bad bottle of wine. At least you got a waitress to take care of the issue eventually!

Blech! I had to chuckle at "Don't smell it first, otherwise you won't drink it". Surely that would be a warning sign that you probably shouldn't try it!
Rachael - "Corked" is a pretty standard term for wine that's gone off - mostly because it's often the cork that is to blame.
